I'm a little tired right now from a combination of slight jet lag and staying up very late last night waiting for our bag to arrive. In true 'Robyn and Steve' fashion our flight over here and first 12 hours were noteworthy and I'll detail it all shortly.
Amy picked us up and we're in Banff right now, a short 1.5 hour drive from Calgary. I'm writing from our hotel for the night, before taking a nap.
The drive from Calgary to Banff is a magical one. Calgary is very much a city and was quite grey and overcast. We actually seemed to bring snow with us to the area as the weather was quite mild and sunny before we arrived. Leaving Calgary and heading West brings the promise of seeing the Rockies and it did not disappoint. The roads seem built as if to showcase the landscape because there is one certain hill that, upon cresting, showcases a horizon full of snow-capped mountains inviting visitors towards them.
From the van, shortly after the mountains revealed themselves:
I then sat in awe for 30 minutes as we navigated through the peaks into Banff National Park. Weaving through the Rocky giants is a very humbling experience. Pictures typically do the landscape little justice, especially when shot out the window of a moving vehicle, but
We arrived in Banff soon after and checked into our hotel after a brief delay. Banff is a beautiful place:
Robyn, Amy, and LJ walking the streets
And, despite their pleas, we wouldn't allow Amy and Robyn to camp for the night in the Banff wilderness...
We'll stay the night here and then head out in the morning. We're all very excited to get on our boards and fresh snowfall in the area has us chomping at the bindings even more. Tonight will be a relaxing evening enjoying a bit of the Banff nightlife and a movie.
I'm not sure if I'll be able to keep up the post-a-day pace but I'm enjoying this a lot so far. Hope you are too.
Until next time.
